Hidden Gems: Le Lavancher & La Joux

For visitors seeking tranquility and authentic French alpine charm away from the bustle, Le Lavancher and La Joux are two of the valley's best-kept secrets. Both hamlets offer stunning views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding peaks, with immediate access to hiking trails and a feeling of real remoteness — yet they're closer to Chamonix than they feel.

Le Lavancher & La Joux

Peaceful hamlets with forest trails, mountain views, and an off-the-beaten-path charm that most visitors to Chamonix never experience. La Joux sits on the south side of the valley; Le Lavancher is nestled in the trees above.

⛷ Pro Ski Tip: On very heavy snow days, experienced skiers can ski all the way from Grands Montets down through a forested off-piste track to Le Lavancher — one of the valley's great secret runs.
Getting there — La Joux: The Chamonix train stops at La Joux on request, dropping you right in the village. Alternatively, Bus 2 to Le Lavancher stop, then a 15-minute walk along a wooden path.

Getting there — Le Lavancher: Bus 2 to the Le Lavancher stop, then a 10-minute stroll to the village.

Les Praz

Les Praz is a delightful village just a short distance from Chamonix town — offering the ideal balance of alpine tranquility and convenient access. Surrounded by lush forests and postcard views of the Mont Blanc Massif, it's home to the Flégère cable car, a picturesque golf course, a serene lake, and a handful of excellent cafés and restaurants.

It's a particularly good base for hikers, as the Flégère lift gives direct access to some of the valley's finest high trails — including the route to Lac Blanc, one of the great day walks in the Alps.

☕ Local Tip: Head to La Petite Social in Les Praz — excellent coffee, local pastries, and evening cocktails with live music. One of the best spots in the valley for an après-hike drink.
Must-Do from Les Praz

Lac Blanc — A Walk Worth Making

Accessible by lift from Les Praz via the Flégère cable car, or by a 2–3 hour hike from Argentière, La Joux, and Le Lavancher. The reflection of the Aiguilles de Chamonix in the still water is one of the great views in the Alps.

How & Where to Book

Four reliable ways to find and book accommodation in Chamonix — each with its own advantages.

🌐 Online Platforms

Booking.com is the most comprehensive for comparing across all price ranges. Airbnb is best for chalets, larger groups, or anything that needs a kitchen.

🏨 Direct with Hotels

Many hotels offer better rates, room upgrades, or included extras when you book directly. Always worth checking the hotel's own website after comparing elsewhere.

🗺 Chamonix Tourism

The official Chamonix tourism website lists verified accommodations and local deals — useful for finding smaller guesthouses and B&Bs not on the major platforms.

🏢 Local Agencies

Companies like Chamonix All Year specialise in holiday rentals and know the valley well. Useful for longer stays, chalets, and anything that needs local knowledge.

Final Tips Before You Book

📅 Book early: Peak winter (Christmas, February half-term, March) and peak summer (July–August) fill 4–6 months in advance. Don't leave it late.
🎫 Check for deals: Many hotels include ski pass deals, shuttle discounts, or lift pass packages — especially for stays of 5 nights or more.
↩ Flexible cancellation: Mountain weather and conditions can change plans fast. Opt for free cancellation wherever possible, even if it costs slightly more upfront.
Frequently Asked Questions
Chamonix town centre is the easiest choice for a first visit — everything is walkable, you're close to the Aiguille du Midi cable car, and there's no need for a car. If you prefer something quieter and don't mind a short bus ride, Les Praz or Les Houches offer a more relaxed introduction to the valley.
It depends on your level. Beginners and intermediates are well served by Les Houches, which has gentler slopes and a quieter vibe. Advanced skiers and freeriders should strongly consider Argentière — it gives direct access to Grands Montets, the valley's most challenging terrain. Chamonix centre works for everyone and gives easy access to the Aiguille du Midi for off-piste adventures.
Not necessarily. The valley is well connected by a free bus service (included with most ski passes) and a train line that stops at several villages. If you're staying in Chamonix centre or Les Praz, you can manage comfortably without a car. If you're staying further out in Argentière, Le Lavancher, or La Joux, a car makes life easier — though it's not essential.
For Christmas, New Year, and February half-term (the busiest weeks of winter), book at least 4–6 months ahead. For summer (July–August), 3–4 months ahead is advisable for popular properties. Shoulder season (October–November and April–May) offers much more availability and better prices.
The Chamonix Mont-Blanc Bus connects all the main villages in the valley — from Les Houches in the south to Argentière and Le Tour in the north. It's free for holders of the Mont Blanc Unlimited ski pass, and also free with the Chamonix welcome card which many hotels provide on check-in. Without a pass or card, single tickets are inexpensive.
