How to Choose the Right
Print Size for Your Space

Wall space, room proportions, focal points, and how to test before you commit — a practical guide to getting the size right every time.

The size of a print has more impact on how a room feels than almost any other decision you'll make about it. Too small, and the artwork floats uncomfortably on an empty wall. Too large, and it crowds the space. Getting it right isn't difficult — it just takes a few minutes of thinking before you order.

"A small print on a large empty wall looks lost. An oversized print in a small room feels overwhelming. The right size makes everything feel considered."

Consider the Wall Space

Before choosing a size, measure the wall where you plan to hang the print. Note the full width and height available, then think about how much of it you want the artwork to fill. A useful rule of thumb: the print should cover 60–75% of the available wall width — enough to feel intentional without overwhelming the space.

📐

Large Wall

Go bold — an oversized print (60×90cm or larger), a triptych, or a gallery wall arrangement. A single small print will look lost and unintentional.

🪟

Small or Narrow Wall

A mid-sized print (30×40cm or 40×50cm) with a clean, simple composition reads better than something busy. Less is more in a compact space.

Room Proportions Matter

Take into account the scale of the furniture and other elements in the room. A print should feel related to what's around it — not floating in isolation above it, and not competing with it for attention.

🛋

Above a Sofa

Choose a width around two-thirds the width of the sofa. Hang it 15–20cm above the back cushions — close enough to feel connected, not so low it crowds the seat.

🛏

Above a Bed

A print roughly the same width as the headboard works well. For a king bed, consider a wide-format print or a set of two or three smaller ones hung as a group.

🖼

Gallery Wall

A central larger print (40×50cm or 50×70cm) anchored by two to four smaller ones (20×25cm or 28×35cm). Sketch the layout on paper and aim for 5–8cm between frames.

🚪

Hallway or Entry

One strong, slightly larger piece works better here than a cluster. It sets the tone for the whole home — choose something with a clear composition that reads quickly.

Creating a Focal Point

If you want the print to anchor the room — to be the thing people's eyes go to first — go larger than feels comfortable and hang it in a prominent position. A statement piece at A1 or A0 above a fireplace or on a feature wall changes the entire feel of a room.

The key is giving it space to breathe. A large print surrounded by clutter loses its impact. Clear the surrounding wall, let it stand alone, and it becomes the room's centrepiece rather than part of the furniture.

Personal Style

The right print size is ultimately a matter of what feels right to you. Think about the atmosphere you're trying to create. A bold statement piece creates energy and focus. A collection of smaller prints across a gallery wall feels more personal and layered — like a curated set of memories rather than a single declaration.

Neither approach is wrong. The question is which one matches how you want to feel in the room.

Experiment & Visualise Before You Order

Before committing to a size, test it with painter's tape on the wall. Mark out the exact dimensions and step back to look at it from the distance you'd normally view it from — typically the sofa or the doorway. This takes two minutes and prevents a lot of second-guessing after delivery.

💡 The painter's tape test: Cut lengths of tape to the exact width and height of the print you're considering. Stick them to the wall, step back, and live with it for a day. If it looks too small after 24 hours, go one size up.

Three Prints, One Wall — Getting the Balance Right

A set of three prints at the same size, evenly spaced, creates a gallery effect that works particularly well above a wide sofa or on a feature wall. The key is consistent spacing and a strong central image.

Frequently Asked Questions
A print around two-thirds the width of your sofa works best. For a standard three-seat sofa (approximately 220cm wide), that's a print between 80 and 120cm wide — roughly 40×50cm up to 60×90cm depending on the wall space. Hang it 15–20cm above the sofa back, centred on the sofa's midpoint. Test with painter's tape first.
Start with your largest or most important print as the anchor — place this at eye level (around 145–150cm from the floor to the centre of the image) and build outward from there. Cut paper templates to the size of each frame, arrange them on the floor first, then tape them to the wall before making any holes. Aim for consistent spacing of 5–8cm between frames. A grid layout works well in formal rooms; a looser cluster suits more relaxed spaces.
The standard rule is to hang artwork so its visual centre sits at eye level — roughly 145–150cm from the floor. When hanging above furniture, measure 15–20cm above the piece rather than from the floor. The print should feel connected to the furniture below it, not floating on the wall above.
All prints are sold unframed. This keeps the price fair and lets you choose a frame that suits your space. Standard sizes are designed to fit frames available at most home stores. A framing guide is available on the site.
