Where is Chamonix?

The Aiguille du Midi (3,842m), Les Drus (3,754m), and the Aiguille du Chardonnet (3,824m) are three of the most striking granite peaks in the Mont Blanc Massif above Chamonix. At sunset, the west-facing aspects of these peaks catch the last direct sunlight while the valley fills with shadow.

Why do the Chamonix aiguilles glow so dramatically at sunset?

The Chamonix aiguilles are composed of pale Mont Blanc granite — a light-coloured rock that reflects warm wavelengths of light exceptionally well at low sun angles. At sunset, when the sun is below the main ridge but still illuminating the highest peaks, the granite transforms from grey to gold, orange, and finally deep red before fading. The effect is most vivid in clear weather following rain, when the air is exceptionally clean.
