Where is Chamonix alpine terrain?

Alpine ibex live on the steep rocky terrain above Chamonix, typically at altitudes between 1,800 and 3,200 metres. They are most commonly seen on the high ridges and cliff faces around the Aiguilles Rouges and in the protected areas above the valley, where they have recovered strongly since near-extinction in the 19th century.

How did ibex almost become extinct and how did they recover?

Reintroduction programmes in the 20th century have since established populations across the Alps, and ibex are now common above Chamonix, with several hundred animals in the Aiguilles Rouges reserve.
