The Wildkirchli caves are a series of limestone caverns directly below the Aescher Guesthouse that were inhabited by hermit monks from the 17th century onwards. Archaeological excavations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries revealed evidence of Neanderthal occupation dating back approximately 40,000 years — making the caves one of the most significant prehistoric sites in Switzerland. A small chapel built by the hermit monks still stands within the cave system.
